Transport overview

The Marathon will be conducted over a 42.195km course passing through East Melbourne, Carlton, Parkville, Melbourne Docklands, South Melbourne, St Kilda and Port Melbourne. It starts and finishes as a ticketed event at the MCG. Extensive changes to traffic and public transport conditions are planned for the day.

All Road Event courses were publicly announced in July 2005. Approximately 150,000 booklets containing course routes and event dates and details were distributed throughout local communities where Road Events are taking place. There will be ongoing communications in the lead up to the Games to help communities fully understand the local arrangements that will be in operation.

*Entry/exit from these streets and roads will only be possible at the end not abutting the course and will be limited to local residents or businesses only.

All roads that cross the course will be closed at the Field of Play when the Field of Play is closed. Certain roads will be open as crossing points (See Controlled Crossing Points below).

Other areas affected by the Marathon

  • Birrarung Marr
  • Carlton Gardens South
  • Southbank Promenade
  • Docklands Park Bike Track)
  • Yarra Promenade

Roads requiring an extensive amount of infrastructure, such as fencing, timing equipment and broadcast points, will be closed first and roads requiring the least amount of infrastructure will be closed last. Roads will be re-opened in sections as soon as possible after the last runner has passed, the equipment has been removed from the roadway and Games volunteers have been safely collected.

It is expected that roads will start to be closed from early morning on Sunday 19 March with the vast majority of the course closed prior to 5am except for the following:

Royal Parade:

  • south bound service lane closed south of Gatehouse Street - it forms part of the course
  • centre carriageway (north and south) between Flemingtion Road and Gatehouse Street will be closed for a short time (approximately 1 hour) when runners are in the vicinity
  • north bound service lane will be open at all times
  • tram operation will continue unhindered

Cemetery Road:

  • will remain open but will be restricted to one lane in each direction

St Kilda Road:

  • north bound service road closed between Flinders Street and St Kilda Junction - it forms part of the course
  • south bound service lane closed between Flinders Street and Domain Road only
  • centre carriageway closed between Flinders Street and St Kilda Junction
  • tram operation will continue unhindered

Swan Street Bridge / Alexandra Avenue:

  • will be closed around 9.00am

To avoid the course, the following diversions are recommended: (Note that CityLink sections will be toll free for journeys completed between 9.00am and 2.00pm on Sunday 19 March)

North - South

CityLink (Western Link) / West Gate Freeway / Kings Way / Queens Road / Dandenong Road, or

Punt Road / Nepean Highway

East - West

Eastern Freeway / Princes Street / Cemetery Road / McArthur Street / Elliot Avenue, or

CityLink via tunnels in both directions

No stopping / tow-away zones

A number of areas in and around the course will have No stopping / tow-away restrictions. Please pay close attention to parking signage in the days before, during and after this event to ensure vehicles are not left in restricted areas.

Controlled Crossing Points

There will be several controlled crossing points (listed below) along the route that will enable traffic to cross the course when runners are not in the vicinity. The crossing points will be opened and closed at the discretion of Victoria Police in consultation with Games officials.

Consequently, at certain times in the lead-up and during the event, long delays can be expected at any given crossing point.

Vehicles will be able to cross the course at:

  • Wellington Parade over Clarendon Street (Carlton)
  • Nicholson Street over Albert Street
  • Victoria Parade over Lygon Street
  • Victoria Parade near Spring Street
  • Elizabeth Street over La Trobe Street
  • King Street over La Trobe Street
  • William Street over La Trobe Street
  • King Street over Flinders Street
  • Toorak Road over St Kilda Road
  • Canterbury Road / Grey Street over Fitzroy Street
  • Normanby Road / Whiteman Street over Clarendon Street (South Melbourne)
  • Ingles Street over Crockford Street
