Sports development volunteer program

As part of Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, the Victorian Government is conducting the Sports Development Volunteers Program. Skilled volunteers will be placed in targeted Commonwealth Countries to provide hands-on advice and assistance with local sports development.

Thirty volunteers - one for each designated country - are now being sought under the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Sports Development Volunteers Program.

The Program is fully funded by the Victorian Government and managed by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC).

Local Commonwealth Games Associations have been asked to identify the activities and areas of development that would most their nation. This could be at either community or elite level. Exactly what the program offers will depend on the needs of each country.

The activities of sports volunteers will likely include -

  • Implementing sports education programs
  • Identifying talented local athletes
  • Helping sports administrations to operate more efficiently
  • Creating programs to increase participation in sport
  • Improving governance arrangements for national sports federations

Shorter term placements could deal with -

  • Conduct a planning workshop
  • Policy development
  • Facilities inventory
  • Management planning
