The link between major events and the environment isn't exactly a traditional
one. But hosting the 2006 Commonwealth Games has the potential to make
Victoria a much more sustainable place to be.
The initiatives of Commonwealth Games the Environment Program aim to
set a new benchmark in reducing our impact on natural resources while
still staging a world-class event. There are three pillars to achieving
this:
Waterwise by building venues with the capacity to collect
and recycle water, and that have water efficient fixtures and fittings.
Carbon neutral by installing energy efficient appliances
at venues, encouraging more public transport use and planting trees
to soak up greenhouse gas emissions.
Low waste by having recycle bins in public spaces, salvaging and reusing building materials at venues and a Games-time anti-litter campaign.
It's gold, gold, gold for the environment!
The biggest event ever staged in Victoria has been given a big gold tick for meeting stringent environmental standards. The Commonwealth Games Environment Report Card has established the Commonwealth Games achieved the objectives of being a low waste, carbon neutral and water wise event. The Commonwealth Games has set new benchmarks in the environmental planning and running of international major events.

Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Interim Environment Repot Card
The Victorian Government has released the interim Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Environment Report Card, which shows new environmental benchmarks will be met.
The release of the Environment Report Card means that the vision to make the Games Water Wise, Carbon Neutral and Low Waste is well on the way to becoming reality. After the Games, an independently prepared Environment Report Card will present a detailed assessment of the Government's environmental achievements.
