Warming up for the Games

Victoria came alive on Sunday 20 November in a state-wide celebration of sport, recreation and community involvement as part of an active countdown to the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

There were plenty of free activities across Victoria - from lawn bowls to Tai Chi, walking, cycling, swimming, as well as music, entertainment and food reflecting local communities and other nations of the Commonwealth.

Warming up for the Games was a chance to try something new and experience how good being active and involved can feel.
What happened?

The City of Yarra hosted a Community walk/fun run, finishing at Dight Falls in a celebration that involved traditional Aboriginal festivities including food preparation and face painting.

The Shire of Glenelg connected townships through its "Communal Fun Run or Walk to Malawi" - Participants achieved the combined target of 10,507 kilometres - the distance from the Glenelg Shire to their Adopt a Second Team - Malawi!

Wodonga's community went Congo crazy, with celebrations at Sumsion Gardens centred around the rhythm of the drum and Wodonga's Adopt a Second Team - Jamaica.

Strathbogie's Violet Town recreation reserve came alive with community members and local legends participating in everything from lawn bowls to little aths, golf and skateboarding - there was something for everyone.
