Solar hot water systems will be installed at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre along with the new 50 metre competition pool.

Rainwater will be harvested and recycled for use in toilet flushing.

During construction, there has been a strong focus on recycling building materials wherever possible. In the case of the work at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, this means reusing both 'offcuts' and the bricks, timber and salvaged from the former Distance Education Centre (now being turned into the School of Sport and Recreation Management).

In addition, a 'cogeneration' plant will heat the pool and generate electricity more efficiently.

As well as good environmental practice, these approaches also deliver cost savings.
