Between watering the turf and powering the lights, it takes a lot of natural resources to keep the MCG running. As part of its redevelopment, a range of devices are being installed to reduce the MCG's ecological footprint. They include:
- Two 750 cubic metre tanks to hold rainwater that falls on the MCG roof, which will be used for flushing toilets and irrigating Yarra Park.
- Energy efficient fittings including lights and solar hot water systems.
- As with all Commonwealth Games construction sites, approximately 95% of construction and demolition waste is being recycled.
- 200 cubic metres of solar photovoltaic panels at the MCG will provide green power.
- Energy efficient design that optimises the use of natural or passive features of the structure such as orientation, ventilation and solar shading.
- Recycling systems for patrons.
