Located on a 20 hectare site in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Parkville (about 5 kilometres from the CBD), the Games Village will be home to around 5,800 athletes and officials from 71 nations.
The Games Village, which will be known as Parkville Gardens following the Games conclusion, is being developed by the Village Park Consortium (VPC), a 50/50 joint venture between Australand Holdings and Citta Property Group. The two key architects involved in the development of Parkville Gardens are SJB Architects, and Billard Leece Architects.
Beyond the Games, the Village will leave a legacy of approximately 1000 new homes, including 200 social housing dwellings and an additional two hectares of parkland.
In both forms, it will be a place where people can come together with a sense of community.

Sustainable design and construction:
We're working to make the Games as good for
the environment as they are for the rest of Victoria.
The Games Village has been designed to minimise energy consumption and
greenhouse gas emissions, reduce water consumption and waste wise discharge,
and to encourage public transport use, cycling and walking.
The design and layout of the houses and streetscapes are consistent
with the surrounding neighbourhood. A variety of facades are being used,
and many houses overlook public open spaces. Social housing is integrated
in the Village with 20% of dwellings allocated to disadvantaged and
low income people. These are of the same appearance and quality as the
market housing and are scattered throughout the development.

Looking after the past
The Games Village has been the site of an experimental farm, a school and a psychiatric institution. The land around the Games Village has a rich history, and $5 million is being invested to restore 11 heritage buildings in the heart of the development.
During the Games, the heritage buildings will be used to provide common facilities for athletes and officials. After the Games they'll be the focal point for a new community, offering a child care facility and a multi purpose community centre.
A community that welcomes everyone
Elite Athletes with a Disability will compete at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games - so accessibility is a key criteria for the Village.
Almost all the dwellings have a range of disabled access features such as wheelchair-friendly toilet and shower facilities. This provides ongoing benefits to future residents and sets a new benchmark for elderly and disabled access.
Games Village - additional information
An independent Planning Advisory Committee was established in 2003 under the Commonwealth Games Arrangements Act to consider public submissions on the development of the Commonwealth Games Village. The Committee reported on 30 June 2003 to the Minister for the Commonwealth Games with 130 recommendations.
The Government released its response to the Planning Advisory Committee's recommendation on 5 August 2003. The Project Delivery Agreement for the development of the Games Village incorporates the implementation of many of these recommendations.
