State Mountain Bike Course

The State Mountain Bike Course has been created at Lysterfield Park, located at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges, 35 kilometres south east of Melbourne.

The Games has triggered a major upgrade of the parks existing trails to create a 20 kilometre network, including a new six kilometre elite competition course.

This course will host the full day cross country mountain bike events, which are part of the Commonwealth Games cycling program.

Sustainability is the cornerstone of the development, which has been designed as a best practice example of balancing the needs of all park users with the natural environment.

Beyond the Games, this course will help Victoria attract national and international competition as well as providing a place for recreational riders of all abilities.

The course has been completed on schedule and within budget. The venue was launched by the Minister for the Commonwealth Games, Justin Madden, on 22 October 2005.

Key facts and figures:

  • an environmental management plan has guided the development, protecting sensitive parts of the park
  • a signage system has been installed to help separate walkers/spectators from cyclists
  • the car park is being expanded by 15 spaces
  • other recreational activities at Lysterfield Park include horse riding, bush walking, swimming and boating
  • 25,000 plants have been planted.
