In preparation for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, the State Government is improving path lighting in some of Melbourne's parks. Parks to receive improved lighting include:

- Yarra Park
- Treasury Gardens
- Fitzroy Gardens
- Kings Domain
- Alexandra Gardens
- Birrarung Marr

The installation of new poles and luminaries in these parks will not only improve lighting efficiency, but will also improve pedestrian safety. This project is complete with the exception of some areas of Yarra Park affected by the redevelopment of the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
