Turning a major event into lasting benefits

About us

The Office of Commonwealth Games Coordination (OCGC) was established by the Victorian Government in February 2002. It is located within the Department for Victorian Communities.

The Victorian Minister for the Commonwealth Games is the Hon Justin Madden, MLC, who also holds the portfolio of Sport and Recreation.

The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games will be a landmark event in Melbourne's history creating lasting benefits for Victorians, Australians and the Commonwealth. As well as hosting a great event, the Victorian Government through the Games will deliver lasting infrastructure, social, environmental and economic benefits to the Victorian community.

The role of OCGC is to ensure the effective delivery by the Victorian Government of the Commonwealth Games, through management and coordination of all relevant bodies involved.

In partnership with a range of other Government agencies such as Melbourne 2006, OCGC is working to ensure that the Games will deliver both the largest and most successful event in our State's history, and also lasting benefits for all Victorians.

Cities and states around the world have found that hosting the Commonwealth Games is a defining moment in their evolution.

The Games attract visitors, generate jobs and investment, and build better infrastructure. They bring people together. They help us celebrate what we have in common, and they encourage an appreciation of what makes us different.

OCGC has the role of coordinating all areas of games activitiy, from ticketing to infrastructure, ensuring that Victoria is on track to deliver an outstanding event for all in March 2006.

We are working to share these benefits across Victoria through a series of programs and initiatives. Details on these programs, which will bring long term social, economic and environmental benefits through the 2006 Commonwealth Games, are available on this website.
